Nordhorn Wins Future Prize for Innovative Cycling Infrastructure

Nordhorn has been recognised for its innovative approach to sustainable transport. The city was awarded the Zukunftspreis Klimaschutzkommune 2018, or 'Future Prize Climate Communal 2018', at an event in Hannover on August 28, 2018. The prize, endowed with 5,000 euros, was presented by Lower Saxony's Environment Minister Olaf Lies.

Nordhorn's winning project is the 'Comfort Cycling Paths' initiative. This involves expanding and improving cycling routes along the Nordhorn-Almelo and connecting canals. The project includes changing right-of-way regulations to favour cycling and widening cycle paths where possible. Mayor Thomas Berling plans to use the prize money to fund further cycling projects in the city. The aim is to encourage more citizens to switch from cars to cycling for daily trips, thereby reducing carbon emissions and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
