Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Day Preorders Mishandled by GameStop
Updated Story:
Nintendo Switch 2 Preorder Fiasco at GameStop
Got screwed over again? You're not alone.
After a potential letdown from retail giants like Walmart, Best Buy, and Target, many gamers pinned their hopes on GameStop for a launch day Nintendo Switch 2. The retailer promised preorders at 11 a.m. ET on April 24, but their site and app crumbled under the weight of eager customers.
At the time of opening, GameStop's site was flooded with an overwhelming number of requests, resulting in a Cloudflare error 502 for bad gateway for several users, including some Gizmodo staff. Even if the GameStop listing for Switch 2 managed to load, it displayed the handheld as "Not Available."
Despite momentary glitches where consumers could place orders, confirmation emails and appearances of purchases in the GameStop account were rare. However, the company assured customers that those who didn't receive a confirmation email would soon receive one.
When we reached out to GameStop for an update, there was radio silence. Clearly, this technical hiccup has resulted in a major snafu for the company. As of now, it seems the Switch 2 is out of stock online from most major retailers, at least until more stock becomes available.
For those still holding onto a glimmer of hope, there's a beacon of light: in-store preorders. The heart of retail still has its charm, and if you're willing to wait in line, GameStop locations might be your ticket to a new gaming experience. Many users have reported seeing lines at stores across the U.S., with varying stock levels. Some stores have as few as 50 units, while others might have a more substantial stash. The key is patience, your car, and a phone for a quick store call before you set out.
In Japan, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa had already issued an apology after preorders for the Switch 2 surpassed the available launch units through Nintendo's My Nintendo Store. Nintendo has promised to send out emails to users ordering directly through the company on May 8, but delivery by June 5 isn't guaranteed.
If preordering proves too much of a hassle, perhaps it's time to indulge in some well-deserved patience. Reviews will be flooding the web after the launch, giving you a chance to make an informed decision about adding another device to your life. Here's to hoping for a smoother experience next time!
