NextStar Energy's EV Battery Plant in Windsor Now Operational

NextStar Energy's (NSE) electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing plant in Windsor, Ontario, has received an occupancy permit. Despite minor construction work ongoing, the facility is safe for use and ready for production.

The C$5bn ($3.5bn) plant, a joint venture between LG Energy Solution Ltd (LGES) and Stellantis, consists of 11 buildings, including two main manufacturing facilities for cells and modules. Construction began in 2022 and is now complete.

The plant, spanning 4.23 million ft2, has an annual production capacity of up to 49.5 gigawatt hours. Assembly of battery modules has commenced, and it is expected to employ over 2,500 local jobs upon full operation.

Windsor mayor Drew Dilkens hailed the C$5bn investment, stating it has positioned Windsor as a leader in electrification. NSE CEO Danies Lee credited the achievement to effective partnership and collaboration.

The newly approved facility will produce lithium-ion battery cells and modules, supporting a significant portion of Stellantis' North American vehicle production. It is set to boost the local economy with thousands of jobs and solidify Canada's role in the EV industry.
