New Dolby Vision Laser Projection System Unveiled in Collaboration Between Dolby and Christie
Christie and Dolby Laboratories are set to launch the next generation of Dolby Vision laser projection systems in May, promising an enhanced moviegoing experience. The new system will capitalize on the cinematic offering introduced by Dolby Cinema ten years ago, delivering more than double the brightness and far surpassing a million-to-one contrast ratio for exceptional whites, blacks, and details.
To showcase lifelike colors, this 4K projection system employs RGB pure laser illumination, enabling Dolby's Wide Color Gamut 1.0. This feature nearly doubles the color gamut of Rec. 709 and exceeds 122% of DCI-P3-capable projectors, ensuring vibrant hues.
Delighted to continue their partnership, Christie and Dolby have emphasized the enhanced reliability and efficiency of the next-gen system, ensuring superior long-term performance and easy operation for exhibitors. The system's lighter-weight design and smaller chassis facilitate seamless integration into a variety of premium theatrical offerings, expanding the reach of Dolby Vision to wider audiences. These offerings include Dolby Cinema, its flagship cinematic experience, and the recently announced Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos solution, designed for exhibitors' premium auditoriums.
Pascal Sijen, senior director of business and strategic planning at Dolby, expresses excitement about the new projection solution, which maintains the same award-winning image performance as previous generations while making it more convenient for exhibitors to adopt.
As for potential features and benefits of the upcoming system, it is expected to incorporate RGB pure laser technology for improved color accuracy and brightness, high resolution, and support for high frame rates. Additionally, the system will likely offer HDR support for deeper, more lifelike images.
The next-gen Dolby Vision laser projection system, featuring RGB pure laser illumination and Dolby's Wide Color Gamut 1.0, is anticipated to deliver improved color accuracy and brightness, high resolution, and support for high frame rates. This collaboration between Christie and Dolby Laboratories aims to expand the reach of Dolby Vision, greatly benefiting various premium theatrical offerings, including Dolby Cinema and the newly announced Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos solution.
