New appointment announced: Moritz Fortmann takes on the role of SynthEyes Product Manager at Boris FX
In a significant move for the visual effects industry, Boris FX has appointed Moritz Fortmann as the new product manager for its renowned 3D camera solve application, SynthEyes. Dr. Russ Andersson, the creator of SynthEyes, is delighted to welcome Fortmann as the dedicated product champion, praising his focus, knowledge, and kind demeanour.
Fortmann, who brings nearly twenty years of industry expertise, has held product roles at Foundry, MAXON, and Blackmagic Design. His understanding of Boris FX's ecosystem and eagerness to enhance SynthEyes is seen as a valuable asset. Notably, Fortmann was previously the solo developer and expert trainer of SynthEyes, making him intimately familiar with the software's intricacies.
The latest version of SynthEyes, 2025.5, introduces several key new features and workflow improvements, all aimed at enhancing user experience, automating tracking tasks, and increasing flexibility in post-production workflows.
One of the standout additions is the flexible lens workflow export. This non-destructive, "export-only" lens distortion workflow allows users to undistort or redistort footage on export rather than baking these changes into the solve. This preserves the original solve, makes timelines reversible, and allows artists to select margin, resolution, and compatibility at export time, improving flexibility and reducing errors downstream.
Another significant improvement is the integration of AI-driven dense, per-pixel motion vector tracking. This feature, known as Machine Learning (ML) motion estimation, significantly improves auto-tracking performance on challenging shots that are blurry, flickery, or have occlusions. The AI model reduces cleanup work, lowers hit pixel errors, and stabilizes tracker prediction.
A new one-click parenting workflow lets users attach meshes directly to trackers in the viewport. As the camera solve evolves (including distortion, scaling, constraints), meshes remain properly attached with preserved hierarchy for 3D and compositing export. Users maintain the ability to tweak pivots and offsets without breaking mesh attachments or hierarchy, simplifying geometry management during solves.
These updates reflect a clear vision from Fortmann and Boris FX to integrate modern AI techniques and improve flexibility, automation, and ease of use in SynthEyes, targeting visual effects artists aiming to solve tough shots faster and with better control over their workflows.
SynthEyes is used for integrating digital elements with live-action footage, an essential VFX workflow. With its acquisition by Boris FX, SynthEyes' technical and creative resources have been expanded, promising even more innovative developments in the future.
