NanoLumens Sued by Cree over Alleged Patent Violation in LED Technology
In a recent development, Cree LED, a leading innovator in LED technology, has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against NanoLumens in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. The lawsuit alleges that NanoLumens has infringed on Cree LED's rights in six patents by selling certain display products.
At the heart of the dispute are several innovations that Cree LED claims are protected by patents. These include moisture-resistant LED encapsulation technology, component layout for full-color pixel displays, miniature Surface Mount Device (SMD) LED design, high contrast SMD LEDs, and Cree’s proprietary FusionBeam™ Technology.
The moisture-resistant LED encapsulation technology allows LED modules to withstand heat, humidity, and rain, rated IPX6/IPX8 for water resistance. This technology is crucial for outdoor high-brightness LED display modules. The component layout for full-color pixel displays is essential for high-brightness outdoor signage with durable performance, applicable to both indoor and outdoor LED displays.
The miniature SMD LED design refers to the physical appearance of the LEDs used in display modules, while high contrast SMD LEDs and Cree’s FusionBeam Technology enhance brightness and contrast in both indoor and outdoor LED displays.
Cree LED emphasizes the importance of protecting its intellectual property to sustain innovation and maintain fair competition in the LED display market. Jesse Reiherzer, Vice President of the High Bright business at Cree LED, stated that protecting intellectual property is essential to sustaining innovation and ensuring a level playing field.
NanoLumens, a company known for its commitment to innovation, quality, and integrity, is reviewing the claims in the lawsuit. The company specializes in custom LED displays mainly for retail and transit environments. NanoLumens allegedly sells certain display products incorporating these patented technologies without authorization, prompting Cree LED to seek damages, enhanced penalties, and a court injunction to halt sales of the infringing products.
However, NanoLumens' ability to serve its clients is not affected by the lawsuit. The company remains confident in the originality of its technologies and plans to vigorously defend against the lawsuit through legal channels.
NanoLumens' Vice President of Marketing, Rick Cope, reiterated the company's commitment to delivering value to its customers, stating, "Our focus remains on providing innovative, high-quality solutions to our clients, and we will continue to do so as we navigate this legal process."
Cree LED has also introduced the industry's first IPX6/IPX8-rated surface-mount device (SMD) LEDs for displays, which support digital signage applications from live events to retail installations. These innovations underscore Cree LED's commitment to pushing the boundaries of LED technology.
The lawsuit is ongoing, with NanoLumens yet to respond publicly. This development is expected to have no material impact on NanoLumens' business operations.
