Moers' Water Supply Secured: Major Pipeline Replacement Project Begins in October
Stadtwerke Moers, the local water supplier, has announced a significant two-phase project to replace the old water pipeline, ensuring the city's water supply security. The first phase begins in October 2025, with the second part planned for 2027. The project, handled by Enni, involves laying a new plastic pipeline over approximately 3.4 kilometers.
The first construction phase, starting on October 6, 2025, will focus on replacing the old pipeline from the Vinner water tower to Vinzenzpark by spring 2023. This section, about 1.2 kilometers, is a crucial part of the city's water transport system. Enni will use a flush-boring method to lay the new pipes at a depth of up to nine meters, minimizing earthworks.
During this phase, traffic will be affected. An der Berufsschule at the intersection with Xantener Straße will be a dead end, and Humboldtstraße will be closed between Leibnizstraße and Reichweinstraße towards the Hufeisen intersection for several weeks. Lanes or sidewalks on Vinner Straße, Humboldt Straße, and part of Xantener Straße will be narrowed, but traffic flow will be maintained in both directions.
The new pipeline, made of plastic and welded, will have significantly higher pressure stability than the old one. This is crucial as approximately 50% of Moers' drinking water flows through this pipeline to the waterworks in Wittfeldstraße. The old pipeline no longer meets today's material standards and has reached its capacity limit, making it unable to convey additional water from the Rumelner waterworks.
The replacement of the old water pipeline is a vital project for Moers' water supply security. Enni's work, carried out in two large stages over approximately 3.4 kilometers, will ensure the city's water needs are met safely and efficiently. The project is expected to be completed by 2028.
