Mobile fraud protection escalates with Sumsub introducing Near Field Communication (NFC) authentication within its Mobile Software Development Kit (SDK)

Sumsub, a leading identity verification provider, has announced the launch of NFC-based identity verification on its mobile SDK. This innovative feature allows users to pass the verification process quickly and securely, enhancing the user experience.

The NFC-based verification process combines secure NFC chip reading—sometimes requiring a PIN—with automated data extraction, biometric confirmation, and compliance checks. Here's how it works:

  1. User Interaction with NFC-enabled ID: The user taps or holds their NFC-enabled identity document (such as a passport or an ID card with an embedded NFC chip) near their mobile device to allow the SDK to read data stored on the chip.
  2. PIN Entry (if required): For certain countries’ eIDs (example: German eID), the user is prompted to enter a PIN to unlock access to the NFC chip data on the identity document, ensuring security during reading.
  3. Data Reading and Extraction: The SDK reads and extracts the securely stored identity information directly from the NFC chip on the ID. This includes personal data such as full name, date of birth, and document number.
  4. Document and Data Verification: The extracted data is verified automatically. The system checks for authenticity features in the data, compares the data with the image on the ID, and performs checks against watchlists and AML/PEP databases.
  5. Liveness Check and Biometric Matching: To confirm the identity owner, the user completes a liveness check usually through a selfie or live video prompting actions like blinking or smiling. The selfie is then matched against the photo data extracted from the NFC chip to confirm that the user is the legitimate document holder.
  6. Compliance and Risk Screening: Sumsub’s backend further screens the provided info for AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and compliance requirements, ensuring no matches on sanctions or PEP lists.
  7. Result Delivery: Once verification is complete, the verification status and any risk scoring are returned to the client application via the SDK or API for the next step in the KYC process.

This feature is now available for testing on the AppStore and GooglePlay. Users need an NFC-enabled smartphone and an NFC-chipped ID document for NFC-based verification. The feature interacts with NFC chips in compatible IDs and ePassports.

NFC verification provides an additional layer of protection against forgery due to the requirement of an original document. It also reduces the risk of fraud and related costs for fintech companies and their KYC providers by allowing instant extraction of identity information, which is then cross-checked with other ID documents submitted by the user.

Regulators like the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority are starting to include NFC-based verification as a compliant option in their AML/KYC requirements. The one-month test of NFC-based ID verification with existing clients began on January 28th, 2022. The feature is compatible with the Mobile SDK on NFC-enabled devices (iOS, Android, native plugins). It has already been added to the new Mobile SDK version (version 1.19.0).

In summary, Sumsub’s NFC-based identity verification process streamlines the verification flow by integrating NFC document reading, biometric verification, and regulatory compliance in a seamless user experience. With NFC verification, users can pass the verification process in less than a minute and at any time, enhancing the user experience.
