Despite a decade passing since Windows introduced its dark mode, its implementation remains inadequate and fragmented in the current version of Windows 11.

Microsoft's Windows dark mode has long suffered from inadequate implementation for close to a decade

In 2015, Windows 10 made its debut with a blend of light and dark UI elements. Fast forward to summer 2016, Microsoft introduced a dark theme toggle, darkening the Taskbar, Start Menu, and Action Center, while leaving the File Explorer and context menus light.

However, the journey towards a fully dark Windows system has been a gradual one. In 2018, Microsoft added a dedicated light theme to Windows 10, making it the default, causing an incomplete look. This inconsistency persists in Windows 11, where some areas or apps might still experience theming inconsistencies compared to smoother, more integrated dark modes in other operating systems.

Windows 11 users can enable dark mode via Settings, darkening system UI elements. Yet, certain areas or apps may still exhibit inconsistent theming. For instance, opening properties dialogs or copying large files can cause bright flashes, a symptom of the incomplete dark mode implementation.

The challenge for Windows 11 lies in its complex legacy architecture and diverse app ecosystem, as well as ongoing stability and compatibility issues in recent versions that Microsoft continues to address through updates. In contrast, platforms like macOS and mobile OSs have more tightly controlled environments and more uniform user interface frameworks, enabling them to implement fully integrated dark modes earlier and more consistently.

Despite these challenges, progress has been made. Microsoft has been working on finishing dark mode during the development of Windows 11, with in-progress work including adding dark mode to older Windows interfaces such as file properties and copy dialogs. However, these efforts have yet to result in a complete and flawless dark mode implementation.

On the bright side, many third-party apps on Windows support dark mode, including Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp, and Office. The built-in Windows toggle allows most apps to switch between light and dark themes, making the user experience more customisable.

The lack of completion of dark mode on Windows 11 is frustrating for many users, especially when working at night. It's a daily occurrence to come across areas of the system UI that aren't themed correctly in dark mode, or in some places, dark mode is outright broken.

As Microsoft continues to refine Windows 11, we can expect to see further improvements in the dark mode implementation. Until then, users will have to navigate the occasional bright flash when opening properties dialogs or copying large files, a reminder of the ongoing journey towards a truly dark Windows system.

  1. Microsoft introduced dark mode in Windows 11, providing it as an option in Settings, but certain areas within the system UI display inconsistently in dark mode.
  2. Microsoft has been consistently working on improving dark mode for Windows 11, including adding the feature to older interfaces like file properties and copy dialogs.
  3. Along with native Windows apps, popular third-party apps like Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp, and Office support dark mode on Windows, catering to user preferences.
  4. Users find it frustrating to encounter un-themed or broken areas of Windows 11 in dark mode, especially during nighttime work, and are anxiously awaiting further improvements in this regard.
  5. Sources such as ZDNet, TechRadar, The Verge, and Microsoft's own documentation are rich resources for troubleshooting dark mode issues and understanding the progress made thus far in Windows 11.
  6. Despite this, the implementation of dark mode in Windows 11 remains a work in progress, leaving users to occasionally encounter flashes of brightness when opening properties dialogs or performing other tasks, a reflection of the ongoing efforts to perfect the dark theme experience in this operating system.
