Mexico Unveils Ambitious AI Language Model Project

Mexico has embarked on an ambitious journey to establish itself as a regional innovation hub in artificial intelligence (AI), with the launch of its AI language model project, Mexico IA. The initiative, announced by Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard on Tuesday, is a collaborative effort between NVIDIA, the Consejo Coordinador Empresarial (CCE), and Mexican authorities[1].

The official launch event, Mexico IA , will take place in Mexico City on Nov. 12 and 13. The event, backed by NVIDIA, will serve as the primary launch platform for Mexico's AI project[1].

At the heart of Mexico IA is the development of an AI language model, designed to draw data from Mexican culture and history. The project aims to make the AI model accessible to over 5 million university students and more than 5 million businesses[1].

The partnership with NVIDIA, a global leader in AI hardware and software, signals Mexico's intent to leverage cutting-edge AI infrastructure and expertise[1]. Potential investment in data centers could reach US $9.2 billion, generating up to $27 billion in indirect economic impact[1].

The AI language model is part of Plan México, one of 18 actions outlined by President Claudia Sheinbaum[2]. The project reflects Mexico's strategic ambition to strengthen its position in the global AI landscape, foster research, talent, and innovation locally, and stimulate diverse AI applications across sectors[2][3][4].

Mexico's AI project is not alone in the global landscape. Other countries have developed their own AI language models, such as France with Mistral, China with DeepSeek, and Chile with LatamGPT[2]. LatamGPT is a collaborative regional project developed by the National Center for Artificial Intelligence in Chile (CENIA), supported by Mexico and NVIDIA[2].

The large language models (LLM) sector is dominated by companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, all based in the United States[2]. However, with its strategic partnerships and commitment to local talent and innovation, Mexico is positioning itself as a dynamic, innovation-focused AI leader in Latin America, aiming to elevate its status in the global artificial intelligence arena[1].

The AI project includes the presentation of a large language model (LLM). While exact technical details about the AI language models are not deeply specified in the current sources, the partnership with NVIDIA and the involvement of other countries in similar projects indicate that Mexico's LLM will be a significant contribution to the field[2].

Marcio Aguiar, Nvidia's director for Latin America, confirmed the company's collaboration in the Mexican AI project[2]. By combining NVIDIA's technological capabilities with government and private sector collaboration, Mexico IA+ aims to boost AI adoption domestically and transform Mexico into a competitive player and innovation hub in the Americas and globally[1].
