Meta to Label AI-Generated Images and Videos Before 2024 US Election
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, is introducing new measures to combat misinformation. It will start labeling AI-generated images and videos shared on its platforms, with a rollout planned before the 2024 US presidential election.
Meta's AI detector, 'AI info/Made with AI', will automatically identify AI-generated content. Users will also have the option to self-label their AI creations during posting. This feature is expected to become mandatory, with potential penalties for non-compliance.
The new labels will appear in all supported languages, starting with AI-generated images. Meta's own AI image generator, Meta AI, already uses labels like 'Imagined with AI', along with invisible watermarks and metadata for identification. This expansion will include AI-generated images created using rival services, not just Meta's own.
Meta's initiative aims to increase transparency, especially during elections. It is working with industry partners to develop common technical standards for identifying AI-generated content, which could potentially extend to all digitally created misleading or fake content in the future.
