Mercedes-Benz Unveils Next-Generation Luxury Electric Vans: VLE and VLS
Mercedes-Benz has announced its upcoming luxury electric vans, the VLE and VLS, which are set to revolutionize the market with their advanced features and dedication to premium design. Based on the new Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA) platform, these vehicles are poised to redefine luxury family transport and high-end VIP transportation.
The VLE, roughly analogous to an E-Class size, is a mid-size luxury electric van seating up to eight passengers. Its larger counterpart, the VLS, is designed for spacious VIP transportation and limousine use. Both models are built on the VAN.EA platform, a dedicated 800-volt EV architecture designed specifically for vans, offering numerous benefits.
Design and Performance
Drawing inspiration from the Vision V Concept, the VLE boasts a modernized panamerica grille, a full-width headlight signature, clean body surfacing, and a wraparound rear light signature. The styling emphasizes luxury and a fresh electric identity.
In terms of performance, the VLE has demonstrated impressive efficiency and range, as shown by a 1,090 km (approx. 680 miles) journey from Stuttgart to Rome with only two 15-minute charging stops. The platform’s 800V setup supports rapid charging and efficient thermal management. It also features 4MATIC all-wheel drive for enhanced performance and handling across various weather conditions.
Comfort and Technology
Inside the VLE, passengers can enjoy electrically adjustable "First-Class" seats offering optimal ergonomics, high travel comfort, and a reclining position. The vehicle maintains stable cabin comfort despite wide external temperature variations, keeping the interior around 72°F during long journeys.
The van will incorporate the upcoming MB.OS infotainment system, offering constant internet connectivity and enabling continuous software updates. Level 2 automated driving assistance will be standard, with plans to introduce Level 3 automation by the end of this decade.
Luxury Features
The VLE and VLS will offer a range of luxury features, including ambient lighting that adapts its color worlds to the music, a surround sound system with Dolby Atmos for spatial sound, and a 65-inch extendable "Cinema Screen" with split-screen function and 4K resolution. The screen can be operated via a touchpad in the center console, which also serves as a vitrine for personal accessories.
A Glimpse into the Future
The Vision V, a precursor to the VLE and VLS, showcases several innovative features, such as a transparent glass that can transform to various levels of opacity, individual lighting moods, and a solar roof providing an additional 20 kilometers of electric range. The Vision V's design sets new standards in design, comfort, and immersive user experience.
Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer, Mercedes-Benz Group AG, says Vision V embodies the perfect harmony between luxury and space. The side windows in Vision V can become additional "screens" for a digital 360-degree experience.
The VLE and VLS are expected to launch in early 2026, offering a production-ready glimpse into the future of luxury electric vans. With their premium design, long range, rapid charging, advanced all-wheel drive handling, and cutting-edge connectivity and automation features, these vehicles are set to cater to upscale family and VIP transportation needs.
