Major Operation Nets 5 Suspects in Europe-wide ATM Explosion Spree
A major international operation has led to the arrest of five suspects in the Netherlands, accused of involvement in a series of ATM explosions across Germany and North Rhine-Westphalia. The suspects, aged 22 to 33, were apprehended on May 20, 2025, following a joint effort by Dutch and German law enforcement agencies, along with EUROPOL.
The operation targeted several suspects, including two alleged 'logisticians' responsible for organizing and preparing the ATM explosions in Germany. The arrested individuals are believed to be part of the Dutch ATM explosive device scene and are linked to explosions in Xanten (2021), Erkelenz (2021), Borken (2022), Hofheim (2023), Vellmar (2023), Wächtersbach (2024), Groß-Umstadt (2024), and Fürth (2024).
Searches conducted against three other suspects aged 26 to 32 in the Netherlands led to the seizure of evidence, including firearms, incapacitants, dyed banknotes, mobile phones, and unknown substances that may be explosives. One of the suspects is also accused of modifying the getaway vehicle used in the ATM explosion in Frankfurt am Main-Fechenheim on 22.06.2023.
The Rapid Response Unit of the General Prosecutor's Office Frankfurt am Main and the HLKA have thanked their Dutch counterparts and EUROPOL for their cooperation in the successful operation. The arrested suspects are expected to be extradited to Germany for prosecution, marking a significant step in clarifying the international cooperation to combat ATM explosive attacks in the region.
