MG's New Luxury Performance Brand, IM, Challenges Tesla

In a bold move, Chinese car maker MG has launched a new luxury performance brand named IM (Intellegence in Motion or Intelligent Mobility). This new brand aims to compete directly with Tesla models, promising advanced technology, high performance, and luxury features.

The IM brand offers multiple model variants, including the IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV. These vehicles come with power outputs ranging from 217kW to an impressive 572kW, and 0-100 km/h acceleration times between 6.8 seconds to as quick as 3.2-3.5 seconds in the Performance AWD versions.

The IM models are priced between $60,990 and $80,990, targeting the same price points as Tesla. They promise a range of around 500 kms, with the larger 100 kWh packs delivering more range on both models. The IM5 sedan offers up to 575 km, while the IM6 offers up to 655 km of WLTP range.

The IM5 and IM6 bear a resemblance to the Model 3 and Model Y from Tesla, but have their own dynamic features that MG is proud of. These include a four-wheel steering system, "One Touch Reverse", and intelligent parking features.

The IM brand also offers unique tech and driving features not found in many other models. For instance, it includes vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality capable of 6.6kW output, enabling the car to power external devices or appliances. Additionally, the IM AD autonomous driving tech uses a rich sensor suite including LIDAR, radars, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors to deliver Level 3 autonomy (conditional automated driving on highways and semi-autonomous city driving), exceeding Tesla’s current Level 2 Autopilot capabilities.

MG's new brand was launched in style at an event in Sydney, attended by models, influencers, and featuring fireworks and a special appearance from the global MG CEO Liu Tao. The IM5 and IM6 can be ordered from MG's dealers or configured online. Both models come with a seven-year warranty when serviced within the IM dealer network across the country.

The IM cars come with premium finishes, a large 26.3-inch screen, a secondary 10.5-inch screen, and a premium sound system with up to 20 speakers. The batteries feed RWD and AWD powertrains, delivering up to 572 kW of power in the Performance AWD variants, and a rear-mounted 217 kW motor for entry-level cars.

With its advanced sensor-based autonomy, faster charging with an 800V architecture, luxury ride features, and competitive pricing, the IM brand looks positioned to be a strong rival in luxury electric SUVs and sedans. It offers some technological advantages in autonomy and charging architecture compared to Tesla.

The IM5 and IM6 were unveiled at the Melbourne Motor Show in April and formally launched in Sydney this week.
