Lübeck's Wall Bridge: From Railway to Green Mobility Axis
Lübeck's Wall Bridge, originally a railway bridge for the Lübeck-Büchener Railway, has evolved into a charming foot and cycle path, symbolizing the city's transition to green mobility. The bridge, one of the oldest preserved in Lübeck, was converted in the late 1990s by the City of Lübeck.
Initially constructed as a single-span steel arch bridge to enable train traffic over the city moat and the Trave, the Wall Bridge received additional side supports for its current use. Today, it offers a quiet and picturesque connection in the southern Wallanlagen transition area.
The bridge's conversion into a pedestrian and bicycle path reflects the city's shift towards green mobility axes. The City of Lübeck initiated and oversaw this transformation, with construction taking place between 1996 and 1999.
The Wall Bridge stands as a testament to Lübeck's historical infrastructure and its evolution. Once a railway bridge, it now serves as a peaceful and scenic route for cyclists and pedestrians, contributing to the city's green mobility network.
