In a significant move for the renewable energy sector in Poland, a joint venture between Spain's GRI Renewable Industries and the Polish Industrial Development Agency has established a new wind tower facility in Gdańsk. The factory, located on Ostrów Island, is set to produce up to 150 wind tower sections annually.

The first wind tower section was produced at the new Baltic Towers facility in May, with each section measuring 50 metres in length, 11 metres in diameter, and weighing up to 500 tonnes. These towers will be used in wind turbines for the generation of renewable energy.

The wind tower factory is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of the renewable energy sector in Poland. This is especially evident with the recent completion of 5 out of 76 Vestas 15 MW turbines at Baltic Power, Poland's first offshore wind farm, by Van Oord in August.

The Baltic Power project, jointly developed by Orlen and Northland Power, is scheduled for commissioning in 2026. Another significant milestone was reached last month by Baltica 2, an offshore wind farm owned by PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna and Ørsted.

The establishment of the wind tower factory was marked by a high-profile event attended by several dignitaries, including Minister of Climate and Environment Paulina Hennig-Kloska, Pomeranian Voivode Beata Rutkiewicz, Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship Mieczysław Struk, Mayor of the City of Gdańsk Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, representatives of the Government of Spain, and Members of the Management Board of the Industrial Development Agency and GRI Renewable Industries.

In addition to the joint venture between GRI Renewable Industries and the Polish Industrial Development Agency, Vestas also entered into a joint venture with the Polish Industrial Development Agency in 2023 to establish a new wind turbine tower manufacturing facility in Poland.

Meanwhile, Boskalis started boulder clearance work at the Baltica 2 site, located approximately 40 kilometres off the Polish coast near Ustka, in August. The wind tower sections produced at the factory will be crucial for the successful installation of wind turbines at offshore wind farms like Baltic Power and Baltica 2.

The development of these wind tower facilities and offshore wind farms underscores Poland's commitment to increasing its renewable energy capacity and reducing carbon emissions.
