Lexus forges ahead with groundbreaking steering system, exclusively available for Irish buyers of the RZ model.

The automotive industry is witnessing a significant shift with Lexus' introduction of its innovative steer-by-wire technology in the RZ all-electric crossover. This groundbreaking system, set to arrive later this year, promises a more responsive and intuitive driving experience.

## Key Features of Lexus' Steer-by-Wire Technology

At the heart of the RZ's steer-by-wire system is a butterfly-shaped yoke, replacing the traditional steering wheel. This design, reminiscent of Formula 1 vehicles, offers a more compact driving space and reduces the need for hand-over-hand or crossed-arm movements. The yoke can move from neutral to full lock with a 200-degree turn, making maneuvering easier[1][3][4].

The system works by transmitting electric signals from a torque actuator to a control actuator, eliminating the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels. This setup provides a more direct and responsive steering experience[1][5]. The system also adjusts the steering gear dynamically based on the vehicle's speed, offering easier maneuverability at low speeds, agile handling on winding roads, and stability during high-speed driving[1].

## Advantages of Lexus' Steer-by-Wire Technology

The steer-by-wire system offers several advantages, including improved safety and confidence, enhanced comfort and space, and responsive and intuitive handling. Drivers will find the system confidence-inspiring, especially on diverse road conditions, thanks to its stability at high speeds and agility[1]. The design opens up more space around the driver, improving comfort and visibility[1]. The system is designed to be highly responsive, making it intuitive for drivers to adapt to, which enhances overall driving enjoyment[1].

The RZ comes in two models - the RZ350 and the RZ500. The RZ350 uses a conventional steering setup, while the RZ500 features the new steer-by-wire technology, along with all-wheel drive and Lexus's VDIM - a dynamic stability programme[2]. The RZ500 also boasts a towing capacity of up to 1,500kg, double the previous capacity[6].

Lexus claims the RZ350 will have a range of 568km on a full charge, with the RZ500 offering a range of 456km[3]. Both models feature a new 77kWh lithium-ion battery and a more powerful 22kW AC charger, capable of recharging from empty to full in 3.5 hours with the right supply, or from 10 to 80% in about 30 minutes via a 150kW DC charger[7].

The new RZ's interior is a standout, with quality on par with Audi and generous boot space and rear legroom[8]. Irish sales of Lexus cars are up nearly 40% this year, with two new dealers added in the past two years, setting the stage for the introduction of the new steer-by-wire technology, called One Motion Grip, to Irish drivers[9].

While the system may take a few minutes to feel natural when driving, it is likely to herald the future of steering[10]. The system gathers additional data on road surfaces from the tyres and uses it to fine-tune responses[1]. After a decade of development, the steer-by-wire technology is finally ready to revolutionise the driving experience.
