IVR Prototype Simulates Last Planner® System's Social Mechanisms in Construction
Researchers have developed and tested a multi-user Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) prototype to simulate the Last Planner® System (LPS) in a hypothetical construction scenario. This study marks a significant step in understanding LPS's social mechanisms.
The Last Planner® System, crucial for successful construction projects, relies on managing social mechanisms alongside its principles. However, simulation games, while teaching these principles, fall short in capturing the social aspects due to lack of socio-technical realism and inadequate gaming controls.
To bridge this gap, the research team identified essential elements for an IVR simulation to study LPS social mechanisms. IVR, with its potential to provide a highly-controlled and realistic simulation environment, could reveal these mechanisms. The prototype demonstrated the feasibility of this approach.
The multi-user IVR prototype, developed and tested in a hypothetical construction scenario, provides a foundation for future research. It shows promise in studying LPS's social mechanisms, an area where research is currently limited. Further exploration is needed to fully understand and effectively use IVR for LPS simulation.
