Issue with direct debit payments resolved by An Post, as per their statement
An internal error at An Post caused a delay in direct debit payments for approximately 90,000 current account customers[1][3]. This issue, which affected a significant portion of An Post’s customer base, potentially caused inconvenience to those relying on automatic bill payments.
The error led to some direct debits being recalled incorrectly, causing vendors not to receive customer payments despite the money appearing to leave the customers' An Post Money accounts[1]. Some customers were alerted to the issue when their mobile phone network operator did not receive a regular payment from their An Post Money current account.
An Post acknowledged the problem and stated that the issue had been resolved as of early August 2025[1]. They worked on fixing the error to ensure that direct debit transactions could resume processing normally and customer payments would no longer be held up. A spokeswoman for An Post confirmed that the issue had been fixed on Friday[2].
It is important to note that An Post's spokeswoman clarified that they never advised customers to make payments directly to any vendors[4]. The exact number of customers impacted by the error is not clear[5]. However, An Post has apologised to those customers affected by the inconvenience and has been dealing with them on an individual basis[6].
The Central Bank, which regulates An Post Money, was approached for comment but did not provide one at the time of publication.
