Royal Enfield: The Undisputed Reign of the Mid-Range Motorcycle Market
Is Royal Enfield overshadowing Harley-Davidson, BMW Motorrad, and KTM in the motorcycle market?
Facebook Twitter Whatsapp E-Mail Print Copy Link Quick Question: Who dominates the motorcycle industry? Typical answer: Japan or China. But here's a surprising twist!
Market titans in the motorcycle industry are usually associated with Japan and its Harley-Davidson or BMW, or China with its mammoth producers like Honda and Yamaha. However, when we narrow our focus to premium, mid-range motorcycles with engine capacities between 250cc and 750cc, a different name emerges - Royal Enfield.
According to Kai Petermann, responsible for the German distribution of the brand, Royal Enfield exclusively produces mid-range motorcycles, steering clear of small-engine scooters and light motorcycles that are popular among other manufacturers. With this strategic approach, the Indian brand managed to produce over one million motorcycles for the first time in a fiscal year, as impressive as any industry heavyweight.
Royal Enfield's lineup boasts four engine series: a single-cylinder 350cc, two air-cooled engines (a 440cc and 650cc single-cylinder, the latter not homologated for Europe), and a 650cc twin-cylinder. The latest addition, a 450cc single-cylinder with liquid cooling, was introduced in 2023 and is currently available in the Himalayan adventure bike and the Naked Bike Guerilla.
A Premium Brand Rooted in India
Royal Enfield, a brand of India, has been steadily growing in popularity, especially in its home market where it is considered a premium choice. The brand's reach is expanding across Asia and the Western world, including Germany, where it ranks as one of the twelve strongest motorcycle brands by volume according to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA).
In the upcoming year, Royal Enfield plans to further solidify its presence in the twin-cylinder segment with the release of the "Bear 650" and "Classic 650" models. These additions will bring the total number of Indian models to twelve, available in various variants and colors. The most affordable model starts at €4,490, while the most expensive retails for €8,390.
