From the streets of FOX, a firsthand exclusive: The cataclysmic blast that shook Shahid Rajaee port in the coastal town of Bandar Abbas has brought to light the "grave weaknesses" of Iran's pivotal sectors, causing a ripple effect as internal unrest grips the Islamic Republic.

Over the past week, Iranian authorities have faced mounting criticism for alleged negligence, attempting to "hush up" fatality numbers, and suspicions about using a civilian port to smuggle military-related materials. The exact extent of the destruction, its economic ramifications, and the effect on ordinary Iranians, dissatisfied with the regime, remain unclear.

The blast, thought to be caused by hazardous chemicals, claimed at least 70 lives and injured over 1,200, according to local sources (Rahim/Middle East Images/AFP via Getty Images).

Saeed Ghasseminejad, a senior advisor on Iran and an expert on its economy with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, provided his insights to our site Digital. He clarified that Shahid Rajaee Port functions as Iran's principal hub for maritime trade, primarily for oil-based products.

Holding 52% of Tehran's oil trade by volume, 77% of its industrial metals, and 85% of all container shipments, although it's not their sole port, the southern port plays a substantial role in Iran's economy (Ghasseminejad). Yet, estimates regarding the intensity of the damage are merely speculative at this time, based on images of damaged containers and administrative buildings within the port.

If the damage proves to be severe, it could put immense economic and logistical pressure on the regime (Ghasseminejad). Just two days after the blast, Tehran claimed port operations had returned to normal. However, conflicting reports suggest that the death toll could be closer to 250, and it might take up to 20 days to contain ongoing fires within shipping containers.

By the 28th of April, drone footage reveals substantial damage, including the destruction of nearby administrative buildings and a crater left by the blast.

Eyewitnesses speculate that fires inside shipping containers could persist for up to 20 days, while officials with the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) have reported this assertion (Digital). A clearer picture will likely emerge in the coming weeks.

"While the final assessment remains unknown, this explosion serves as a stark reminder of the critical vulnerabilities within Iran's infrastructure and the regime's inability to effectively manage such catastrophes," added Ghasseminejad (Digital).
