The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, is issuing a recall for certain vehicles due to potential fuel pump defects. Meanwhile, the NHTSA is also investigating malfunctioning electronic door handles in Tesla Model Y cars from the 2021 model year.

Stellantis is set to carry out a voluntary safety recall on approximately 53,849 vehicles, including 29,467 units of the 2017-2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia and 24,382 units of the 2018-2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The recall is aimed at addressing concerns about the usability of manual door releases inside these vehicles, with Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa leading the efforts to repair the defective fuel pumps.

The identified defect in the Stellantis recall could result in engine fuel starvation and an unexpected loss of motive power, posing a potential risk of collision. NHTSA estimates that 1.2% of the recalled vehicles may have a defect that could lead to reduced fuel flow.

On the other hand, the NHTSA investigation into Tesla Model Y cars is focused on reports of malfunctioning electronic door handles. NHTSA has documented nine reports where individuals were unable to open the doors of their Model Y vehicles, with some parents having to break a window to retrieve children from the vehicle. The door handle issue appears to occur when the electronic door locks receive insufficient voltage from the vehicle.

The Just Auto Excellence Awards are open for nominations. These awards provide a platform for companies to showcase their achievements, elevate their industry profile, and position themselves among top leaders driving automotive industry advancements.

In a separate development, earlier this month, Stellantis announced a recall of 91,787 Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) of 2022 to 2026 model years in the US.

The interim notification to owners of the recalled Stellantis vehicles is scheduled for late October 2025. The NHTSA raises concerns that the manual door releases inside the Tesla Model Y may not be easily usable by children, adding to the urgency of the investigation.
