Talia Lidia Gonzalez: A Talented Editor Finding Inspiration in Travel and Family
Talia Lidia Gonzalez, a Miami-born and raised film and TV production graduate from the University of Southern California, has made a name for herself in the editing industry. Her impressive resume includes work on popular shows like DC's Legends of Tomorrow, 12 Monkeys, and Larry King Now.
When it comes to her creative process, Gonzalez values taking breaks and finding inspiration from various sources. She confesses that when she feels creative burnout, she steps away, goes for a walk, drinks coffee, and clears her mind before returning to work. Her travels and interactions with people from different cultures often provide her with fresh perspectives that fuel her creativity.
Preparing for a big project, Gonzalez delves deep into the source material, studying any influences or time periods relevant to the project. Her admiration for contemporary directors such as Jon Favreau, Kathryn Bigelow, Hank Corwin, Tom Cross, and Thelma Schoonmaker, as well as her fondness for the original Star Wars trilogy and shows like The Mandalorian and Boba Fett, undoubtedly influence her work.
Working from home during the pandemic has presented challenges for Gonzalez. She emphasizes the importance of taking breaks, eating lunch at a consistent time, and separating work and personal time. Despite these challenges, she continues to stay fueled during long editing sessions with espresso, coffee, and matcha energy drinks.
Gonzalez uses Avid Media Composer together with Boris FX Sapphire plugins, such as Film Damage, Grain, Scanlines, WarpFishEye, Glow and Rays, and Camera Shakes. One keyboard shortcut she cannot live without is Ctrl + Z (Undo).
Reflecting on her career, Gonzalez feels that movies and television capture the individual's uniqueness in a way that is accessible to everyone. She began her career editing Hallmark movies and working for Larry King Now. If given the opportunity, she would have liked to collaborate with director Frank Capra, known for films like It's a Wonderful Life.
Gonzalez advises her younger self that just because one is talented doesn't mean one won't have to start their career by getting someone coffee. She believes that editing is a microcosm and reflection of how people perceive and interact with one another in reality.
