Hyundai's Inster gears up for a muscular concept reveal
Hyundai has announced that the Inster, a compact electric vehicle, will be launching in Australia during the second quarter of 2025. One of the most exciting additions to the lineup is the Insteroid concept, a modified version of the Inster that promises to deliver an immersive driving experience.
The name Insteroid is a nod to the world of steroids, reflecting its funky, youthful, and muscular nature. Hyundai has released early images of the Insteroid, showcasing its unique design inspired by video game aesthetics.
The Insteroid concept car enhances the standard Inster EV by integrating a powerful and unique audio system, a playful video game-inspired user experience, and higher power output, while retaining the compact EV platform. The BeatHouse sound system, a key feature of the Insteroid, offers an immersive in-car audio environment with exclusive soundtracks and effects tailored for various driving scenarios.
The design of the Insteroid is more than just visually appealing. It takes inspiration from arcade games, reflected not just in its striking appearance but also in its interactive and user experience design aspects. This enhances driver engagement beyond traditional automotive design.
While exact performance numbers are not disclosed, the concept version signals a sportier, more dynamic electric ride. It is expected that the Insteroid will exceed the standard Inster's 84.5 kWh battery capacity and 147 kW power output.
The Insteroid follows the lineage of Hyundai's 'rolling lab' development models, including the RN22e. The RN24 concept, another Inster-based design experiment, shared an 84kWh battery with the Ioniq 5 N. It also featured dual electric motors, hinting at the Insteroid's potential powertrain setup.
The production-spec Inster debuted globally in June 2024. The Insteroid, on the other hand, is a conceptual exercise aimed at exploring more expressive electric vehicle design. With its massive flared wheel arches, a wider track, 21-inch wheels, a large rear wing, and a diffuser, the Insteroid promises to be a head-turner on the roads.
In summary, the Hyundai Insteroid concept car is set to revolutionise the electric vehicle landscape with its unique audio system, gaming-inspired user experience, and higher power output. Further technical specifications remain undisclosed at this stage, but one thing is certain - the Insteroid is poised to offer a driving experience unlike any other.
