Huawei's Strategy to Outshine Tech Giants using Less Potent Processors
In a significant move towards self-reliance and resilience, Huawei Technologies, based in Shenzhen, China, has announced its plans to roll out the world's most powerful AI computing clusters over the next two years. This development comes amidst intensifying competition between the U.S. and China in the field of artificial intelligence.
The heart of this ambitious project are the new 'superpods' named Atlas 950 and 960. A superpod, as defined by Huawei, is a group of interconnected computers that combines the power of thousands of chips. The Atlas 950 and 960 superpods will be based on the Ascend 950 and 960 chips, due out in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
Huawei aims to develop novel AI chips for its Ascend series over the next three years. The company is addressing the challenge of keeping pace with American competitors without access to advanced semiconductors by using more chips and developing the architecture to make them work well together.
The superpods are intended for running models in the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence. The rollout includes the launch of the Atlas 950 and 960 superpods, which, according to Huawei, will be the most powerful in the world and will remain so for several years. The world's most powerful 'SuperClusters' could be formed by connecting dozens of Huawei's SuperPods.
This strategy was outlined by Eric Xu, the current rotating chairman of Huawei, at a customer conference. The move by Huawei is part of China's efforts to develop its own technology as America restricts the sale of advanced chips to China. The Chinese government has reportedly told companies to stop buying some American chips, seeking to transform China into a global tech leader less reliant on imported components.
The planned Ascend 970 chip could follow in 2028, further strengthening Huawei's position in the AI technology race. This development by Huawei signifies a stronger push towards self-reliance and resilience in the face of export restrictions, and marks an exciting new chapter in the world of artificial intelligence.
