Gray Media Introduces New NextGen TV Functions for Super Bowl Sunday Broadcast

Gray Media, a leading broadcasting company, is set to enhance the viewing experience for millions of Super Bowl fans across eight markets. The Super Bowl coverage on February 9 will be broadcast in High Dynamic Range (HDR) using NextGen TV/ATSC 3.0 technology, a move that promises improved contrast between bright and dark colors.

Rob Folliard, Gray's senior vice president and chairperson of the NextGen TV consortium PearlTV, has emphasized that NextGen TV enables advanced features to boost viewer experience. This HDR broadcast for the Super Bowl is similar to the HDR formats launched in various markets by Gray Media in the past, including KVVU in Las Vegas, Nevada, WXIX in Cincinnati, Ohio, and WFLX in West Palm Beach, Florida.

In addition to the HDR broadcast, Gray Media has also introduced a new NextGen TV free gaming channel, GameLoop, in two more markets. GameLoop, available over-the-air for free, can be accessed on WANF in Atlanta on channel 46.20 and WVUE in New Orleans on channel 8.20. The channel offers a variety of classic games like Pac-Man, Tetris, Doodle Jump, and Planet Crossword, a collaborative crossword experience designed for television. The games can be played on select NextGen TVs using the remote or mobile phone.

Gray Media plans to launch GameLoop in additional markets soon, as part of their continued efforts to increase NextGen TV offerings and provide more value to their audience.

In other Super Bowl markets, WHNS in Greenville-Spartanburg, SC and Asheville, NC, WBRC in Birmingham, Alabama, KPTV in Portland, Oregon, and WALA in Mobile, Alabama have also launched HDR formats for the Super Bowl. WVUE, Gray's Fox affiliate in New Orleans, has launched Dolby Vision and HDR10+ formats for the Super Bowl.

However, at the time of writing, there are no specific announcements regarding other Super Bowl markets offering HDR broadcasts using NextGen TV/ATSC 3.0 beyond Gray Media's announcement. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it would be best to check directly with local broadcasting networks or the NFL's official announcements regarding Super Bowl LIX broadcasts.
