Government Decision Upholds Access to WhatsApp and Telegram Services

The Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation, and Aerospace Industry has announced that rumours about a ban on the use of foreign messengers such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and others are false.

In a statement posted on their website, the ministry clarified that the national messenger Aitu is necessary to ensure that civil servants can securely exchange official information intended for official use only. The ministry commented on the rumours about the potential ban on using WhatsApp and Telegram for personal use, stating that there is no such ban in place.

Aitu, launched in 2018, is a protected national messenger that combines messenger, social network, and payment service functions. Users can exchange messages and calls, create groups and channels, use mini-apps, make transfers, pay for services and taxes, and access state services on Aitu.

The initiative to introduce Aitu is solely for official communication within central and local government bodies, as well as quasi-governmental organizations. The goal is to enhance information security and transition to a protected digital environment.

Yesterday, the transition to Aitu for official correspondence began in the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev ordered the government to transfer all communications containing personal data to the protected national messenger Aitu during a meeting on artificial intelligence development.

However, it is important to note that Aitu does not replace or interfere with foreign messengers in the personal lives of citizens. All servers for Aitu are located in Kazakhstan, which meets data protection requirements and makes the system more reliable for government agencies.

The deadline for transition to Aitu for civil servants has not been specified in the article. The ministry encourages everyone to use Aitu for official communication and continue using their preferred foreign messengers for personal use.

In a related development, the German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt also announced that there will be no ban on the personal use of foreign messengers like WhatsApp, Telegram, and others.

Aitu will become the main tool for official correspondence, work chats, urgent notifications, and interaction with state digital platforms. The ministry's statement regarding Aitu and the rumours about a potential ban on personal use of foreign messengers was reported on their website.
