Google's Gemini project on Wear OS is now broadly available

Google has unveiled a new feature for Wear OS devices, introducing Google Gemini - an advanced AI assistant designed to bring powerful capabilities directly to your smartwatch.

Natural Speech Interaction

With Google Gemini, you can talk naturally to your watch, and it understands your speech patterns to provide fast, concise responses without needing your phone. This means you can ask questions, set reminders, and perform various tasks all through voice commands.

Productivity Features

Gemini introduces several productivity features unique to Wear OS. One such feature is power calling, which allows Gemini to make calls to local businesses to check pricing and availability.

Another productivity boost comes from the integration with Google apps like Gmail, Calendar, and Drive. This integration helps you manage your schedule, summarise your day, and provide a rundown of your week, all accessible via the Gems tab in the app.

Automation and Tasks

Gemini also offers automation features, such as Scheduled Actions. You can ask Gemini to give you a daily summary of your calendar and unread emails automatically every morning.

The enhanced AI capabilities of Gemini 2.5 Pro model power improved coding, science, reasoning, and multimodal tasks on Wear OS. This allows Gemini to handle more complex queries and tasks with ease.

Accessibility Features

Captioning features are now available during real-time conversations with Gemini, improving accessibility for users who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Integration with Fitbit on Pixel Watch

When integrated with Fitbit on the Pixel Watch, Gemini can display live health metrics, such as heart rate and step count, by asking simple questions like "What's my heart rate?" or "What's my step count?". Additionally, you can control your exercise, such as starting, pausing, resuming, or ending an activity by saying commands like "start my run."

Availability and Update

Google Gemini is rolling out for all Wear OS watches running Wear OS 4 and above from brands including Pixel, Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, and Xiaomi. Watches upgrading to Wear OS 6 will also support Gemini along with their brand-specific apps.

To start using Gemini, activate it by saying “Hey Google,” pressing and holding the side button on your watch, or tapping the Gemini app icon on your watch screen. The Gemini update is part of Google's monthly "Gemini Drops" for AI features; check your Wear OS app updates and ensure your watch system is updated to receive these enhancements.

After installing Google Gemini on Wear OS, you'll receive a "Gemini is now on your watch" notification.

Extensive App Support

Google Gemini provides access to various apps and extensions, such as Google Search, Messages, Maps, Workspace, and YouTube Music. This means you can perform a wide range of tasks directly from your smartwatch.

Real-World Applications

Gemini can retrieve information from emails, like "Where's the coffee place Emily emailed me about?". It can also provide the address for an appointment and navigate to it, such as "What is the address for my dentist appointment today? Navigate there."

Google Gemini was first shown off in May before I/O 2025. Since then, it has been steadily improving and rolling out to more devices.

In summary, Google Gemini enhances Wear OS by delivering an AI assistant capable of natural conversation, task automation, local business calling, integrated planning, and contextual AI search, accessible through an update available for Wear OS 4+ devices. Launch it via voice, button, or app icon after updating your device.

Wearables like smartwatches can now integrate with advanced AI assistants such as Google Gemini, transforming them into efficient gadgets for productivity. With Gemini, you can make calls to local businesses for pricing and availability, manage your schedule, and even ask the assistant to give you a daily summary of your calendar and unread emails through automated Scheduled Actions.

This new technology in Wear OS devices also extends support to various apps and extensions, like Google Search, Messages, Maps, Workspace, and YouTube Music, enabling users to perform a wide range of tasks directly from their smartwatch.
