Google Launches AI Mode in India for Voice and Image Search
Google has introduced AI mode in India, offering voice and image search features powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.5. This move aims to provide an alternative to chat-based AI tools like ChatGPT, catering to the significant market of over 870 million internet users in India.
AI mode allows users to ask complex, multi-part queries and follow-up questions, going beyond traditional search engines. Early testers in India have submitted queries that are two to three times longer than typical search queries, indicating a shift in user behaviour.
Powered by Google DeepMind, AI mode includes a shopping feature and supports voice and image search functionalities. David Sharon, head of multimodal generation at Google DeepMind, is a key figure associated with the AI model 'Nano Banana' used in the Gemini app, popular in India. Google has been promoting AI-driven products like AI overviews, with over 1.5 billion users globally.
AI mode was first launched in India via Search Labs for English queries, following successful tests with premium subscribers in the US. With its advanced features and customisation for the Indian market, AI mode is set to transform the way users interact with search engines in India.
