GM and Honda Team Up to Produce Affordable Fuel Cell Systems in Michigan

GM and Honda have joined forces to produce more durable and affordable fuel cell systems. The collaboration has led to the establishment of FCSM in Brownstown, Michigan, with a joint investment of $85 million. The new systems, set to be one-third less expensive than previous models, are a result of innovative production methods and improved low-temperature operation.

FCSM, established in 2017, incorporates first-of-its-kind automation methods for producing membrane electrode assemblies and fuel cell assembly. The company aims to manufacture high-quality, durable, and affordable hydrogen fuel cell systems for various applications.

Dr. Jurij Bregir, manager at FCSM, has been instrumental in using corrosion-resistant materials and enhancing performance at low temperatures. The new fuel cell systems are twice as durable as the 2019 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. GM and Honda engineering teams have integrated their expertise and intellectual property into FCSM to create commercially viable hydrogen fuel cell systems.

The 70,000-square-foot facilities have already created 80 jobs and will utilise world-class hydrogen energy solutions across various product applications and commercial projects. This is a significant step forward for GM and Honda, marking the first volume production of fuel cells for transportation and beyond.
