Global tech giant Apple assists suppliers in exponentially boosting the adoption of renewable energy on a global scale
Apple is making strides in its commitment to a greener planet, investing directly in renewable energy projects around the world. The tech giant has recently announced that it is powering nearly 500 megawatts of solar and other renewable projects in China and Japan.
This global initiative extends to various countries facing energy challenges. Solar projects in Colombia, the Philippines, and South Africa are currently providing affordable and reliable electricity to communities that previously struggled with energy access.
In South Korea, 13 suppliers have committed to bringing clean energy online over the last year. Notable contributors include LG Display Co. Ltd. and Samsung SDI, both of which have pledged to power all Apple production with renewable electricity.
The momentum continues in China, where 23 new suppliers have joined the program in the last year. One of these, Ruicycle, will be using clean energy in its closed-loop recycling processes for Apple.
In Europe, 11 new suppliers have made clean energy commitments over the last year, including Infineon, Viscom AG, and Lumileds. Japan also sees 20 new suppliers committing to clean energy, with Kioxia Corporation and Sharp Corporation among them.
Apple's Power for Impact program is focused on providing under-resourced local communities with access to renewable energy. As of today, 213 of Apple's major manufacturing partners have pledged to power all Apple production with renewable electricity across 25 countries.
The projects online today will support greenhouse gas reductions equivalent to removing 3 million cars from the road for one year. In 2021 alone, these renewable projects avoided 13.9 million metric tons of carbon emissions.
Apple's efforts are not limited to large-scale projects. Several suppliers, such as Nitto Denko, have invested in on-site solar energy. In the US, Apple is investing in the 2,300-acre IP Radian Solar project in Brown County, Texas.
The benefits of these initiatives extend beyond the environment. These projects bring jobs and lead to energy savings that can be reinvested into local communities. Apple retains the environmental attributes of each project, and communities use energy savings to support economic growth, education, health, and other social initiatives.
The expansion of Apple's Power for Impact program is ongoing, with plans to extend it to Israel, Nigeria, Thailand, and Vietnam. This global commitment to renewable energy is a significant step towards a greener future.
