Global Audiovisual Sector Spotlight: EM Acoustics' Comprehensive Stadium System Dazzles

Chillin' at the Theatre Royal Plymouth:

Strut your stuff at the Theatre Royal Plymouth, where the action never stops! From touring musicals to comedy gold, this joint's got it all. Nestled within, you'll find the Lyric Theatre, a adaptable space with a seating capacity of 1,300 (or 800, depending on the moveable roof). Opened its doors in 1982, this venue's distinctive architecture is a head-turner, but it does pose some challenges for sound installation.

EM Acoustics: Here's the Scoop

When TRP needed an upgrade to its outdated sound system, they turned to none other than EM Acoustics, a brand they've trusted for years. Dan Mitcham, head of sound at Theatre Royal Plymouth, explains, "We've always had a great relationship with them, and the upgrade to EM for the Lyric just made sense. We knew what their products were capable of."

The challenging auditorium shape and adjustable ceiling height meant achieving uniform sound coverage was a tough nut to crack. However, Mitcham was confident that EM Acoustics would deliver a solution.

Working the System: The Inner Workings

The main PA on the proscenium is based around EM Acoustic's flagship Reference Series. R10 loudspeakers are placed on both sides of the auditorium, with a centre cluster of R8s. S18 subwoofers are placed on either side of the stage, and EMS81X loudspeakers as side fills. For additional coverage, S15 loudspeakers and EMS61s / EMS51s serve as delays and fills. Four MC15 floor monitors and EMS81X spot speakers for special effects complete the system. Powering this setup are DQ10 and DQ6 amplifiers, all networked via Dante.

Wallop to the People's House

The sound system's upgrade has brought some serious improvements to the audio quality at Theatre Royal Plymouth. "The sound is incredible and so transparent," said Mitcham. "It sounds fantastic straight out of the box. We've had minimal need for EQ adjustments, meaning we can focus more on refining the performance characteristics to make our jobs easier."

With all three stages now fully EM Acoustics'd, the flexibility is a real game-changer. Engineers and performers alike are wowed by the quality of the sound and the ease of integration. "The response from visiting production teams and engineers has been overwhelmingly positive," said Mitcham. "It gives us great adaptability and continuity."

To keep up with the times, the new system is Dante-enabled, ensuring a truly future-proofed solution.
