Thomas Dohmke Steps Down as GitHub CEO, Microsoft Shifts Leadership Structure
GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke Announces Departure, Pursuing New Business Venture
Thomas Dohmke, the native German CEO of GitHub, has announced his resignation, effective at the end of 2025. Dohmke, who moved to the United States more than a decade ago after selling his startup to Microsoft, is launching a new startup following his departure from GitHub.
Dohmke has been at the helm of GitHub for nearly four years, playing a key role in Microsoft's USD 7.5 billion acquisition of the code-hosting platform in 2018. Under his leadership, GitHub has grown to serve over 150 million developers worldwide, hosting over one billion repositories and forks.
One of Dohmke's most significant contributions was the introduction of GitHub Copilot, an AI-powered tool that serves around 20 million users. This service marked GitHub's entry into the age of copilots and artificial intelligence.
In a move away from operating independently, GitHub will be integrated more closely into Microsoft's CoreAI division following Dohmke's departure. There will be no direct replacement for Dohmke as CEO, and instead, Microsoft has decided to dissolve the CEO position and integrate GitHub leadership into its broader corporate structure.
After Dohmke steps down, GitHub will be led collectively under Microsoft’s management. Julia Liuson, head of Microsoft’s developer division, will oversee GitHub’s revenue, engineering, and support. Mario Rodriguez, GitHub’s chief product officer, will report to Microsoft AI platform VP Asha Sharma.
This approach reflects GitHub’s increasing integration within Microsoft’s AI and developer strategy. After Dohmke's resignation, GitHub will continue its mission as part of Microsoft's CoreAI organization.
Dohmke's reason for resignation was his startup roots tugging on him. No further information about the new startup he is launching has been provided at this time.
GitHub, owned by Microsoft, is a popular code-hosting platform that serves developers worldwide. The article is published by Staff India, an international franchise of Media.
