Germany's First Fully Climate-Neutral Natural Swimming Pool Opens in Winsen (Luhe)
Germany's first fully climate change-neutral natural swimming pool has opened in Winsen (Luhe), Lower Saxony. The innovative pool, which opened on May 2, 2025, generates its own electricity and promotes biodiversity, saving over 130 tons of CO2 annually compared to conventional outdoor pools.
The pool's climate change neutrality is achieved through various eco-friendly measures. It uses a 66 kWp photovoltaic system to produce more electricity than it consumes, and its water is cleaned naturally using biological and mechanical processes in planted substrate filters, eliminating the need for chlorine.
The catering at the pool prioritises regional and seasonal ingredients, minimising plastic packaging. The pool's design also fosters biodiversity, featuring natural shorelines and native plant species, along with targeted wildlife protection measures.
Funded through the federal 'Adaptation of Urban Areas to Climate Change' program, the Winsen (Luhe) natural pool demonstrates a sustainable future for outdoor swimming. Following its opening, the city of Esslingen also opened Germany's first climate change-neutral outdoor swimming pool, the Freibräunlingbecken, in 2025. The idea for the natural swimming pool was first proposed in 2017, following a public participation process.
