Germany Aims to Slash Chemical Plant Protection Use by 25% by 2030

Germany has launched a comprehensive strategy to significantly reduce the use of chemical-synthetic plant protection products. By 2030, the goal is to cut their use and risk by at least 25% compared to the 2015/16 to 2020/21 average. The strategy, published on 14.02.2023, is based on the 'Key points paper on the use of plant protection products' and involves various stakeholders.

The Lower Saxony Way, a collaborative effort between the state government, environmental associations, and agriculture, has developed this reduction strategy. Progress will be closely monitored, with interim evaluations in 2027 and a final assessment in 2030. The effectiveness of measures will be evaluated using key figures from farm statistics and the impact of CAP funding in the new period starting in 2023.

The strategy includes practical measures such as designating water protection strips and implementing specific requirements in nature conservation areas. It also encourages voluntary measures through the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Technological progress and digitization play a crucial role, with the Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture testing and developing digital and sensor-based application methods. Farmers are incentivized to adopt these methods, with funding available for not using plant protection products on flowering strips or areas on arable land under the CAP. The strategy also aims to substitute the use of plant protection products with alternative methods, fostering information exchange between conventional and organic farms.

Germany's strategy to reduce the use of chemical-synthetic plant protection products by 25% by 2030 is well underway. With a clear roadmap, continuous evaluation, and a range of measures including technological innovation and financial incentives, the country is committed to achieving this goal. The success of this strategy will not only benefit the environment but also contribute to sustainable agriculture.
