Electronic Arts (EA) Scraps Black Panther Game and Closes Cliffhanger Games Studio

Electronic Arts (EA) has decided to cancel the Black Panther video game, which was one of several Marvel projects the company was planning to develop. This move comes with the closure of its development studio, Cliffhanger Games, as part of a broader strategy to focus on core growth opportunities and major franchises.

The cancellation of the game and the subsequent studio closure were detailed in an internal email by EA Entertainment president Laura Miele, who emphasized the need to "sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities." This move also includes layoffs in EA's mobile and central teams, although the exact number of affected employees remains undisclosed.

The association with Marvel, however, remains solid, with Motive Studios continuing to develop the Iron Man game. EA has other potential Marvel projects in the pipeline.

EA's strategy aligns with its recent trend of consolidating its efforts on a smaller handful of successful franchises, such as Apex Legends, Battlefield, The Sims, and Skate. The company is focusing on significant growth opportunities by streamlining their development efforts.

The cancellation of the Black Panther game is not the first time EA has pared back its portfolio in recent years. Last month, the company cut 300 jobs from the Respawn and Fan Care teams, and. it is attempting to place the affected employees in other departments, as it has done in the past.
