Funke Media Group Restructures for Digital Growth
Funke Media Group is restructuring its regional media to drive digital growth. The cross-title editorial management team, Editorial Development, will lead a shared editorial strategy. This move aims to create binding blueprints and better integrate editorial, product, and technology aspects. Anne Krum, currently Chief Editor of Digital Development at WAZ and WP, will head the new unit, focusing on digital strategies for regional news media.
Previously, there was no dedicated role for driving digital growth in the development centers of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and Hamburg. However, in October 2025, Funke announced the establishment of an editorial development department, with Anne Krum at its helm. This new structure enables quick decisions, allowing for testing and rolling out innovative journalistic formats across all locations.
The new unit will bundle areas such as audience development, social media, newsletters, and artificial intelligence. Cordula Schmitz, Chief Editor Digital of Hamburger Abendblatt, will take on the deputy leadership. Christoph Rüth, CEO of Regional Media at Funke, aims to strengthen bonds with users, reach new target groups, and boost digital subscription growth. Innovations will be built first in the development regions of NRW and Hamburg.
Funke Media Group's restructuring seeks to accelerate digital growth in its regional news media. With Anne Krum leading the new editorial development department, the group aims to test and roll out innovative formats, strengthen user bonds, and boost digital subscriptions. The new structure is expected to drive digital progress in regional news media.
