Financing department in North Rhine-Westphalia shares tax advice with social media personalities
The North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) tax authority has unveiled a special online portal designed to help influencers navigate the complexities of tax laws. This initiative comes in response to ongoing investigations revealing potential tax evasion by influencers in NRW, estimated to have resulted in a loss of around €300 million.
The new website aims to provide clear, practical advice on tax matters, with topics covering income taxation, categorisation of social media income, tax obligations, and avoiding tax evasion. It also offers guidance on understanding the valuation of intrinsic value linked to influencers' business activities and general education to ensure they do not claim ignorance of tax rules.
Minister Marcus Optendrenk (CDU) emphasised the growing importance of the influencer industry, stating that it is a significant sector that needs support and legal certainty. His goal is to inform, educate, and be partners for influencers building their professional future.
The website is not just for seasoned influencers but also caters to beginners. It provides comprehensive guidance on various aspects of taxation, including income, trade tax, value-added tax, sponsorships, product placements, merchandise sales, and prize money.
Investigations suggest that most of those affected acted intentionally, and the tax authority aims to help influencers claim less ignorance regarding their tax obligations. The authority also seeks to assist those who make money through social media unwittingly.
With this new resource, all tax information is bundled in one central place, making it easy to understand and always accessible. The portal represents an effort by the NRW financial administration to proactively address the tax risks associated with the growing influencer business model and to support influencers in fulfilling their tax duties correctly.
