Vodafone-Operated Fiber Optic Expansion Set to Transform Communities in Göttingen District

In a significant move towards a modern and efficient infrastructure, the expansion of fiber optic cable is underway in various communities in the Göttingen district, including Staufenberg, Bad Sachsa, Hann. Münden, Rosdorf, Harz, and Buchenbach. The project, initiated by the Breitband Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald Association (ZVBBH) on September 18, 2025, in the district of Falkensteig, Buchenbach, is set to connect even previously underserved areas.

The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of this ambitious project, with construction costs estimated at approximately 15 million euros. A substantial 90% of these costs are covered by federal and state funds.

The expansion will see the construction of approximately 53 kilometers of routes for fast internet in the municipality of Buchenbach, ensuring that the town and its districts remain future-proof. The deep construction work for this project is scheduled to be completed by autumn 2027.

Vodafone will be responsible for operating the network once the expansion is completed, with ownership remaining with the ZVBBH. This partnership will provide residents and businesses with reliable and high-speed internet services.

Network activation for the expanded fiber optic cable is planned for the first half of 2028. The expansion will also extend to Falkensteig, where commuters have expressed concerns about potential traffic restrictions, as the B31 towards Hochschwarzwald and Dreisamtal could be affected.

Com construction managers have reportedly warned of possible closures and restrictions before the start of construction, according to the Badische Zeitung. District Administrator Dr. Christian Ante mentioned that this is the 30th construction start in the district.

Mayor Ralf Kaiser of Buchenbach views the expansion as a crucial step for the future, stating, "This development will bring significant benefits to our community, ensuring we remain competitive in the digital age."

The expansion of fiber optic cable creates an important foundation for a modern and efficient infrastructure, set to benefit not only the Göttingen district but also the wider region. As the project progresses, residents and businesses can look forward to a more connected and efficient future.
