FBI Warns of Sophisticated Phishing Campaign Impersonating IC3
The FBI has issued a warning about a sophisticated phishing campaign targeting unsuspecting users. Cybercriminals are impersonating the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) to steal personal data, including names, addresses, and banking information.
The FBI advises the public to be cautious while accessing the IC3 website. To avoid spoofed websites, type the URL directly into the browser's address bar as www.ic3.gov. Be wary of sponsored search results and ensure the URL ends in [.]gov.
Scammers are employing various tactics to trick users. They create fake versions of the IC3 website, encourage direct messages on social media, and use AI-generated personas. Graphika has identified numerous fake Facebook pages and profiles impersonating IC3 units and agents. The FBI warns against engaging with any such pages or sharing personal information without verifying the website's legitimacy.
The FBI's warning comes as criminals are increasingly using AI and deepfake technology to personalize their scams. No specific group has been identified, but the FBI urges the public to remain vigilant. If you suspect you've been targeted, report it to the real IC3 at www.ic3.gov.
