Experts in military and civilian fields brainstorm ideas for utilizing advanced technology to create a modernized armed force for the future.
In a significant move towards modernizing India's defense sector, the Indian Army and NITI Aayog have joined forces to harness cutting-edge technologies. This collaboration aims to build a future-ready force aligned with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance) and Viksit Bharat (developed India) by 2047.
The shared commitment to integrate indigenous capabilities was emphasized in a high-level meeting held in August 2024, which was the first under the leadership of General Upendra Dwivedi, the Army chief, and B V R Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog. The meeting took place in New Delhi and marked the beginning of a new era in the defense sector.
The focus of the meeting was on charting the future course for the Army during the "Amrit Kaal," a period of immense potential and transformation for the nation. The deliberations were in line with the government's vision to make India a developed nation by 2047.
Key technologies and initiatives under this collaboration include the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for battlefield awareness and rapid decision-making. The integration of AI-enabled sensors with secure communication networks will enable real-time data sharing between frontline units and command centers.
Autonomous Systems, such as drones, UAVs, and ground-based robotic platforms, are being tested in exercises like ‘Divya Drishti’ to enhance surveillance and operational capabilities in high-altitude and challenging terrain.
Research and incorporation of new advanced materials are likely to improve soldier protection, mobility, and equipment durability, supporting future combat needs.
Sensor-to-Shooter Connectivity is another area of focus, with the integration of next-generation sensor technologies aimed at providing fast, secure communication and enhancing battlefield responsiveness.
The collaboration emphasizes indigenous research, innovation, and synergy between the military and civilian tech sectors. This strategy aims to ensure technological sovereignty and dual-use solutions that boost both defense preparedness and industrial growth.
The Indian Army's Vision@2047 was articulated in the August 2024 meeting as "To transform into a modern, agile, adaptive, technology-enabled, and self-reliant future-ready force." The meeting also highlighted the commitment to the "Decade of Transformation."
The Army has declared 2024 as the "Year of Technology Absorption" and is undertaking various initiatives to induct niche technology and systems. The Indian Army posted photos from the meeting on platform X, signaling the start of this transformative journey.
This strategic move reflects a shared commitment to modernize the Indian Army by leveraging frontier technologies, aligning with the broader goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047 to create a technologically advanced and self-reliant defense force. The goal is to ensure that India's defense preparedness remains robust and responsive to ever-evolving challenges.
