Expands global IoT functionalities, introducing the IoT Nano by Viasat

Viasat has announced the launch of its new IoT Nano connectivity service, a cost-effective, low-power satellite IoT solution designed for diverse industries such as agriculture, transport, utilities, mining, and environmental monitoring. The service is powered by ORBCOMM's next-generation OGx satellite IoT service.

Key Features and Capabilities

The IoT Nano service offers several key features and capabilities:

  • Powered by ORBCOMM OGx and operated over Viasat’s ultra-reliable L-band satellite network, ensuring global, weather-resilient coverage with up to 99.5% uptime.
  • Supports messages up to 1MB, enabling larger payloads than previous IoT satellite services while maintaining low latency (under 15 seconds for small messages and up to 2 kbps for larger files).
  • Enables two-way, non-IP messaging without the need for SIM cards, allowing devices to work globally and reducing data consumption and costs.
  • Supports both legacy IsatData Pro (IDP) mode and the enhanced OGx mode, preserving existing infrastructure while adding capabilities like reduced power consumption, larger messages, and faster speeds.
  • Offers versatile, compact, low-power hardware and embeddable modules ideal for medium to large-scale IoT deployments in remote and hard-to-reach locations, simplifying installation with patch antennas that require no pointing.
  • Provides end-to-end security with RESTful API access, enabling integration and management for enterprise applications.

Impact on Industries

The IoT Nano service is expected to have a significant impact on several industries:

  • Agriculture: Enables precision farming through asset monitoring, environmental sensing, and remote diagnostics to optimize yields and reduce operational costs.
  • Transport and logistics: Facilitates near real-time tracking, telematics, and event-driven data delivery to improve fleet management, safety, and maintenance scheduling, even in remote areas.
  • Utilities and heavy equipment: Assists in monitoring infrastructure and equipment health, enabling remote firmware updates and reducing downtime.
  • Mining: Supports rugged asset tracking and monitoring solutions for safety and operational efficiency in isolated locations.
  • Environmental monitoring: Provides a reliable platform for collecting data from remote sensors, enhancing situational awareness and decision-making in challenging environments.

Partnership with ORBCOMM

ORBCOMM is partnering with Viasat to enable solution providers to build and scale IoT applications across various industries. ORBCOMM's president of satellite IoT, Dave Roscoe, stated that OGx delivers faster speeds, larger messages, and lower power usage.
