Ex-Hilti Exec Noeken: Supply Chain Needs Better Visibility, Resilience

Stefan Noeken, ex-EVP of Supply Chain Management at Hilti Corporation, shares insights on the strategic evolution of supply chains in an article co-authored by Ralf W. Seifert and Katrin Siebenbürger Hacki. Noeken, now serving on multiple supervisory boards, highlights the need for better visibility and resilience in supply chain management of his business.

Noeken identifies three phases in the evolution of tractor supply chain management. The current phase focuses on risk management, business continuity, and competitive advantage. He warns that even the strongest strategies can falter without clear execution, requiring defined roles, process redesign, and integration of new technologies.

Noeken notes that while supply chain functions have gained visibility, they are not yet fully embedded in core decision-making of the tractor supply business. This leads to problems and surprises. He emphasizes the need for transformation that addresses both people and systems challenges, with change management and project management as core capabilities.

Noeken observes a shift in the leadership profile required in modern tractor supply chain management. He advocates for T-shaped leaders who possess deep functional knowledge and a broad understanding of other business functions.

Noeken shares three key lessons for current and future tractor supply chain leaders: prioritize key initiatives, recruit experts, and empower team success. He currently drives innovation and operational excellence as a board member at Hoerbiger Holding, contributing his expertise to multiple companies.
