EU's Digital Product Passport to Revolutionize Supply Chains from 2027

The European Union's Digital Product Passport (DPP) initiative is set to revolutionize supply chains. Mandatory from 2027, it aims to enhance transparency by requiring detailed product data. Key to its implementation is RFID technology, with Fraunhofer and Kathrein Solutions leading the way.

The DPP, a unifying framework, connects measurement science, digital manufacturing, and regulatory compliance. It targets product groups like batteries, electronics, and textiles initially. Preparing for it will involve significant changes to labeling, process management, and data availability.

Fraunhofer, a key player, is developing a comprehensive package to support DPP introduction in RFID technology. They offer special consulting services in cooperation with the RFID consortium. Kathrein Solutions, another key player, offers RFID hardware components and collaborates with the RFID Konsortium for data modeling, IT integration, and implementation strategies.

RFID technology, a key enabler for DPP, provides each product with a secure and unique digital identity. It allows fast, automated, and reliable access to product data records, even under challenging conditions. The DPP aligns with developments in metrology and digital twin technologies, strengthening traceability standards and lifecycle monitoring.

The RFID Konsortium offers a 'DPP KickStart' package to help companies pilot their first digital product passport implementation in as little as four months. Investment in RFID for DPP compliance can also drive broader operational efficiencies, such as automated warehouse management and enhanced product traceability. The DPP's mandatory implementation from 2027 underscores the importance of early preparation.
