EU Launches €545M 'Scaling Up Renewables' Campaign for Africa's Clean Energy Transition
The European Union has launched a significant initiative to support Africa's clean energy transition. Co-hosted with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the 'Scaling Up Renewables in Africa' campaign aims to accelerate the shift towards sustainable energy sources. A €545 million Team Europe package, unveiled by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, will fund projects across multiple African nations.
The campaign, set to conclude with a high-level event at the G20 summit in South Africa in November 2025, seeks to triple renewable energy and double energy efficiency worldwide by 2030. The Global Gateway Forum in Brussels, scheduled for early October, will provide additional support for Africa's clean energy transition. This includes boosting regional energy distribution, rural electrification, and expanding access to renewable energy sources such as wind and hydro power.
Projects will be implemented in Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Ghana, Central Africa, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Somalia. One notable project is the 'Friendship Loop', a transmission line connecting Pointe Noire, Brazzaville, and Kinshasa, led by the government of the Republic of Congo. The EU views investing in Africa's clean energy transition as a strategic choice that strengthens supply chains, creates jobs, and enhances energy system resilience.
The 'Scaling Up Renewables in Africa' campaign, part of the EU's Global Gateway investment plan, underscores the bloc's commitment to supporting Africa's clean energy transition. With a €545 million Team Europe package, the campaign seeks to raise global awareness and mobilise investments for clean energy generation and access across Africa. The upcoming Global Gateway Forum and the G20 summit event will further cement these efforts.
