Energy company BPH Energy persists in progressing the development of 'turquoise' hydrogen technology.

Clean Hydrogen Technologies, a US-based firm renowned for its processing capabilities for hydrogen production with no CO2 emissions, is continuing to push the boundaries in the field of 'turquoise' hydrogen development.

The company, best known for its work in hydrogen production, has completed stage 1 work in 2022/2023 on scaling the catalyst production at a centre of excellence in India. This is a significant step towards the commercial production of turquoise hydrogen, which is produced using a process called pyrolysis and has no CO2 emissions.

BPH Energy (ASX: BPH), an Australian firm pursuing the development of 'turquoise' hydrogen for the global market, has entered into a strategic partnership with Clean Hydrogen Technologies. BPH began its hunt for an answer to developing turquoise hydrogen in 2022, reaching an agreement to acquire an initial stake in Clean Hydrogen Technologies with Advent Energy as its partner in the purchase.

Clean Hydrogen's stage 3 system, planned for completion in 2024, will consist of two reactors working together. The project is currently in the commercial study stage before moving to stage 3. The final customer systems are designed to have a network of several reactors working in concert.

Clean Hydrogen's solution is being designed to work in various stages, including heavy transport fuelling hubs, mid-stream at steel plants, and upstream where natural gas is processed into hydrogen. The technology being developed through Clean Hydrogen's method requires minimal changes to and has little impact on existing infrastructures and supply chains.

While direct information on Clean Hydrogen’s project is unavailable, the closest and relevant active development is by Tulum Energy. Tulum Energy is actively advancing turquoise hydrogen production using natural gas through pyrolysis with electric arc furnace technology, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional grey hydrogen. Tulum Energy plans to commercialize scalable hydrogen production with costs comparable or better than traditional fossil-fuel-based hydrogen without relying on subsidies, targeting heavy industry decarbonization.

The wider hydrogen industry is advancing turquoise hydrogen as a key low-carbon alternative to grey hydrogen in natural gas-rich regions. Globally, there is a strong focus on transitioning from grey hydrogen (steam methane reforming with emissions) to cleaner hydrogen forms like turquoise and green hydrogen to meet net-zero goals. Turquoise hydrogen development is part of an expanding clean hydrogen market, with over 1,500 clean hydrogen projects planned worldwide in 2024, reflecting strong industry momentum.

Clean Hydrogen Technologies plans to use natural gas through the pyrolysis method to create emission-free 'turquoise' hydrogen. The company will build an end-to-end process for separating out the hydrogen from the uncracked hydrocarbons and then compress it into hydrogen bottle storage. Clean Hydrogen will also sell a carbon product called carbon composite made from majority-based carbon nanotubes in combination with alumina and bottled hydrogen of 99%+ purity.

In a recent development, BPH, Advent Energy, and Clean Hydrogen entered into a loan conversion agreement in October 2023, whereby BPH and Advent each have an interest of 19.5% in the US firm. This partnership is expected to accelerate the development and commercialization of turquoise hydrogen technology.

As the world moves towards a cleaner and more sustainable future, the development of turquoise hydrogen is a significant step forward in reducing carbon emissions and meeting net-zero goals. The partnership between BPH, Advent Energy, and Clean Hydrogen Technologies is set to make a significant impact in the global hydrogen market.

The strategic partnership between BPH Energy, Advent Energy, and Clean Hydrogen Technologies, as revealed in October 2023, promises to expedite the development and commercialization of turquique hydrogen technology, a crucial advancement in the clean energy sector and a significant step towards meeting net-zero goals. This partnership, marked by a loan conversion agreement, will incorporate elements from various industries, including finance, energy, technology, and the burgeoning hydrogen market, to drive the future of emission-free fuel production.

In the broader context, the global energy industry is witnessing a shift from grey hydrogen to cleaner alternatives like turquoise and green hydrogen. This transition, fostered by a strong emphasis on decarbonization in industries such as finance, technology, and energy, is expected to propel the clean hydrogen market, with over 1,500 projects planned worldwide in 2024, according to industry forecasts.
