Energy Alliance Sees €185-€255B Boost in Decentralized Solutions by 2045
A coalition of energy companies, the 'New Energy Alliance', has commissioned a study by Roland Berger, predicting significant benefits from decentralized energy solutions. Meanwhile, BMW and Eon plan to offer a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) deal for iX3 electric car customers by 2026. The federal government is also taking steps to facilitate V2G development.
The study, conducted in 2025, involved companies like Vonovia, Thermondo, Enpal, 1Komma5°, Octopus Energy, Elli, and E3/DC. They foresee a benefit of €185 to €255 billion from decentralized energy solutions by 2045. To accelerate V2G, BMW and Eon propose a deal offering up to €720 per year to iX3 customers who allow access to their battery.
To support V2G, the federal government recommends speeding up smart meter rollout and digitalizing processes for small operators. Uniform guidelines for AC wallbox connections and flexible network conditions are also suggested. A study by the Munich Research Institute for Energy Economics (FfE) identifies hurdles and provides a roadmap for V2G development. The quickest measure, relieving V2G models from electricity tax, could happen in the first half of 2026. The government also plans to create large-scale experimental areas for grid-supporting services and recognize redispatch costs.
The 'New Energy Alliance' sees great potential in decentralized energy solutions, with a potential benefit of €185 to €255 billion by 2045. BMW and Eon's V2G deal for iX3 customers, along with the federal government's supportive measures, signals a significant step towards a more flexible and efficient energy system.
