Elon Musk's xAI Sues Rival OpenAI Over Alleged Trade Secret Theft
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, has launched a lawsuit against its rival, OpenAI. The suit, filed on 23rd September in a California court, accuses OpenAI of gaining an unfair advantage by stealing trade secrets. This latest legal dispute adds to Musk's ongoing issues with OpenAI and its co-founder, Sam Altman.
The lawsuit centres around former xAI employee Robert Keele, who was accused in September 2021 of passing secrets to OpenAI. The case also involves former engineer Xuechen Li and two other ex-xAI employees allegedly involved in the trade secret theft. Musk claims that OpenAI lured these employees to gain access to proprietary information, including details about xAI's chatbot, Grok.
Musk's legal team has presented emails as evidence, showing OpenAI's attempts to recruit xAI employees. The lawsuit follows multiple warning letters sent to OpenAI by Musk, which went unheeded. This is not the first time Musk has sued OpenAI and Apple over alleged anti-competitive practices, including Apple's preference for ChatGPT in its App Store.
The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, seeks damages and an injunction to prevent further misuse of xAI's trade secrets. It adds to Elon Musk's ongoing legal disputes with OpenAI and Sam Altman, highlighting the intense competition and complex relationships within the AI landscape.
