Ali Yousif, in his resplendent uniform, can often be found manning the "Frame," the world's largest picture frame since 2018 and one of Dubai's most dazzling attractions. With the sun setting and temperatures finally dipping below the sweltering 40-degree mark, Ali and his colleagues from police headquarters have arrived to put the spotlight on the latest automotive marvels.
A serving officer for two decades, Ali has earned a place in the most coveted special unit of the police force. But while UAE's SWAT team battles covertly against organized crime and smugglers, Ali's role is far more star-studded. Today, he's arrived at the Frame almost silently in his new Lotus Emeya.
The Supercar Fleet: Born in 2001
The 918-horsepower electric limousine is part of the supercar fleet that the UAE Police began operating in 2001. "It all started back then," the officer reminisces, perfectly cast as any leading action hero in his green uniform. "Today, we have 18 vehicles in our supercar fleet, ensuring safety and order at hotspots popular with tourists."
Once a novelty, the supercar fleet has become synonymous with Dubai and the UAE. The list of luxury cars is impressive: Ferrari Gran Lusso, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Panamera, Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Bentley Continental, BMW 8 Series Coupe, or Mercedes AMG GT.
While Ali Yousif moves the electric power Lotus in its traditional white-and-green livery, his colleagues are diligently patrolling tonight with other luxury cars such as Rolls-Royce Cullinan Mansory, Bentley Continental GT, Audi R8, and a Tesla Cybertruck during double shifts.
Luxury Rides from Auto Manufacturers
Worldwide car manufacturers are eager to supply this unique special unit with equally pricey and speedy patrol vehicles, which the Dubai Police loves to showcase at events and sights. "We are a tourist police force and, as such, the face of our country," explains Ali, "There are no high-speed pursuits with the supercars. That's what our other colleagues are responsible for."
Controversies among colleagues regarding who gets to drive which supercar? None at all, as the respective seven-figure vehicles are allocated unassumingly via duty roster, just like other patrol vehicles like BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, or Nissan Patrol. Patrol officers typically drive conventional engines, but there are some Tesla models, such as the Cybertruck, which has made waves on patrol duty for several months now.
Fully-armed Lamborghinis
For years, Lamborghini has been a reliable partner, providing Dubai Police with spectacular patrol cars, including the latest 666-horsepower Urus Performante, capable of reaching speeds up to 306 km/h. General Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, stated: "The powerful super SUV was acquired as part of Dubai Police's efforts to increase the number of patrol officers. The Lamborghini Urus Performante will aid Dubai Police in serving residents better, maintaining social security, and providing services in popular tourist destinations."
In addition to its trademark white-and-green paint job, the patrol vehicles are also fitted with flashing blue lights, and extras like a weapon safe, first aid kit, or defibrillator are on board for any emergency situation. In case of emergencies, the officers are well-prepared for a high-speed dash to one of Dubai's numerous hospitals.
For quick deployment and their awesome power, officers regularly undergo training on all types of vehicles, with the supercar police service being just one of the roles within the local force. Officers frequently switch between departments and units. Ali Yousif is currenty relishing his role in the supercar division.
