Bunnings Installs Electric Vehicle Chargers Across Australia and New Zealand

Bunnings, the Australian hardware and garden giant, is quietly installing electric vehicle (EV) chargers at locations across Australia and New Zealand. The installation of these chargers was first reported by Yahoo News and is part of a larger push to decarbonize Wesfarmers' retail operations.

The chargers, which offer fast-charging capabilities, are intended for customer use while shopping. While the exact power outputs for the Bunnings installations are not specified, "fast chargers" in Australia typically refer to AC charging at 22 kW (three-phase) or DC fast charging (often 50 kW or higher).

The rollout of EV charging stations includes not only Bunnings but also other Wesfarmers retail brands. The company has received $100 million in government-backed financing specifically to install EV chargers and solar panels—not just at Bunnings, but also across other group businesses like Officeworks. Upgrades and new installations are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Sarah Aubrey, a local electrification and EV advocate, discovered a new EV charger with two charging ports and a space for easier access for those with mobility issues during her visit to Bunnings at Alexandria. Joshua S. Hill, a Melbourne-based journalist who has been writing about climate change, clean technology, and electric vehicles for over 15 years, reported on this development for Renew Economy and The Driven since 2012. However, it's worth noting that Mr. Hill's preferred mode of transport is his feet.

As of July 2025, there is no publicly available, precise figure for how many Bunnings stores in Australia and New Zealand have electric vehicle chargers installed. More detailed information may become available as the program nears completion at the end of 2025.

Two more charging locations are expected to be rolled out over the coming weeks. As of now, 14 Bunnings stores have EV chargers installed, including the one in Alexandria where a 120kW charger has been installed.
